Lake River and Sea Fishing in Tanzania

The deep waters of Lake Tanganyika are rich in big-game fish. The waters of this deep lake are only just beginning to gain the world-wide fame which means these waters are less populated with boats and fishing conditions are absolutely perfect. Lake Tanganyika is the longest lake in the world, and at 1,433 meters is the second deepest in the world. Amazingly the lakes lowest point is 642m below sea level; and it holds a volume of water seven times that of Lake Victoria. For divers as well as anglers, this is paradise, with over 350 species of fish, offers some of the finest lake game fishing in Africa. Some of the game fish to be found here include the goliath, tigerfish and Nile Perch.

After a big storm I have seen people body surfing with waves sometimes reaching up to six meters. This is for the enthusiast only - I think - as I have tried to body surf but buoyancy was a problem for me in the fresh water.

Many fishermen come to African lakes looking to land a tigerfish; many claims are made by operators in Southern Africa that this fish is found only in Southern Africa countries - this is untrue as these game fish are also found here in Tanzania. The tigerfish is well-known for its powerful tail and savage teeth; and is claimed by some to be the world's most exciting freshwater sport-fish. I think this is mainly because of the drama of the whole experience the jarring strikes, lightning runs and spectacular leaps; a typical tigerfish weighs 3-8 pounds, with 10-20 pounds being landed from time to time.

In contrast the shallow waters of Lake Victoria are home to legendary Nile Perch growing up to 300lbs, and even the novice fisherman can be encouraged by casting off a jetty to catch abundant tilapia. Nile Perch of over 80 kg have been caught; the main method of fishing in the lake is trolling with lures. Apart from the Nile perch, local tilapia of up to 5kg have been caught on bait. I have seen catfish of over 50kg caught often.

The Guinness Book of World Records lists an incredible 232kg Nile perch caught by local fishermen on Lake Victoria. Another way to fish is from the shore - there are few un-spoilt places, I am sure, in the world where in fresh or salt water it is possible to land fish in the 20 - 100lb plus category.

Sea fishing in one of the most exciting areas of Tanzania is in an area called Kilwa in southern Tanzania - close to the Mozambique border - this is a blue water fishing paradise. For those who wish to experience the unbelievable thrill of saltwater fly fishing this is the place to head. Many different species can be teased up to a fly and the rush of playing a big fish on light gear is an unforgettable experience.

Fishing is best in the months of August, September and October. Silver service fly-camps are set up on an evening along the coastline and trips include all fishing, full-board accommodation, beer, table wine, soft drinks, and transfers to and from Dar-es-Salaam to Kilwa.

Make Your Child's Next Fishing Trip One To Remember

Almost all children like to go on fishing trips. Fishing trips are not only fun; it also gets them outside in the sunshine and in touch with nature.

Next time you take your children or grandchildren fishing, get them involved in the whole process. Don't just load them into the car and head out to the fishing hole. Make the whole fishing trip an experience that they will remember.

Start with the basics.

If you can, find someone who has a stand of canes and see if they will let you come and cut a few cane poles. Let your children pick out their own fishing pole. Then cut it down for them and show them how to get the leaves off. Next show them how to tie the fishing line to the fishing pole and attach the hook and bobber.

Next comes bait. Sure you could just stop by the bait shop and get a container of worms but let's make this an adventure. You could probably find a few worms by simply turning over a few rocks in your yard. If you have a garden or access to a garden then a little digging with a hoe will probably yield all of the worms that you need for your fishing trip. Borrow a small bowl with a lid from the kitchen to keep them in. Don't forget to add some dirt to keep your worms from drying out.

Now when you get to the lake or pond, show them how to bait their hooks. If the children are young, just let them watch you - hooks are sharp and you don't want them to get hurt. Older children should be able to bait their hooks themselves. Just make sure that you're there to help if they need it.

And don't forget to take along a First Aid kit. Hopefully no one will get hurt but it's good to be prepared.

Above all, have fun and make your child?s fishing trip one that they will remember for a long time. There's nothing more exciting than catching a bream or perch on a cane pole.

Fishing Tackle: How To Tackle Any Questions You Have

Fishing is a sport that requires you to be prepared. Sure, you can grab any sort of stick, attach a rope to it and TRY to catch something. But, in today's wide world of products, you can do so much better and become that much more successful at fishing. There are several things that you'll need and that's what we will talk about here.

First, what is fishing tackle? This is the equipment you'll need to get your bait out there. You don't need to spend a fortune on it, but what you should do is get the right products for your needs instead.

The Rod And The Reel

The most fundamental product that you need is the rod and reel. For a beginner, go with a lightweight choice that has a spinner reel on it. You can even purchase them together. As for length, go for about six feet for the adults and four to five for your child.

Next on the list is fishing line. It is also called filament. You'll need to know which weight to get. This is called the pound test. The larger the pound test number is, the stronger the line is. Depending on the type of fish you are after, you'll need to choose the line that is about the weight of the fish. For a small, light rod, go with up to six pound test. If you are using a large sized spinning reel, go with a stronger line. For bait casting reels, go with six to thirty pound test. The most popular options are the eight to sixteen. Don't always think that heavier is better though as many of the fish will be able to see the line and won't go near it.

Also in your equipment, you'll need a fishing net. This will help you to catch your bait and can help you bring the fish in.

Options In Bait

There are many options in bait that you'll need in that tackle box. First, we'll talk about which live choices you have. Go with earthworms to start. You can dig your own or get them from the bait shop. You can go with mealworms or grubs as well. Depending on the type of fish you are after, you are likely to have a type of bait to use to catch them. Ask your local anglers for information about which seem to work the best for your area.

There are several other products that you will find that you'll need in the way of tackle. Here are some of them and what they are good for.

Bobbers. These are floats that you'll attach to your line to dangle your bait in front of the fish. They give you some extra weight when casting. They will sit at the top of the water. Small is a better way to go and make sure it is just enough weight to keep the bait from dragging.

Hooks. You'll need to choose the right size for the job at hand. When using live bait, buy sizes from six to ten. For bullhead or catfish, you'll need larger hooks. For catch and release fishing, look for fish hook barbs that can be flattened. To choose look for the size that is about the right size for the mouth of the fish you are trying to catch. Too large and you won't get a bite and too small will leave you with the hook in its belly.

Sinkers are next. These are weights that come in a wide assortment. They are used to keep your line from floating under the water. Split shot sinkers are tiny and they are by far the most popular. But, some weights can get up to a pound in weight. Make sure that they are lead free though when you purchase them.

Leaders. These are small metal pieces with an eye on one end and a pin catch on the other. The pin is used to slip a hook or lure onto it. You'll then thread the line through the eye and knot it. They are helpful when it comes to changing hooks and lures. You may want to consider them when you are after muskellunge, walleye, or northern pike as they'll keep the fish from biting through your line.

Swivels are used instead to attach hooks and lures without a leader. There is an eye on one end and a pin clip on the other. The same process is done as with a leader except that the pin clip opens much like a safety pin. They protect your line from tangling as your bait moves in the water.

In your tackle box, fill it with several very important things. For example, you'll need a good quality fishing knife. This will help you do many things from cutting tangled line to cleaning your catch. Also, make sure to have a pair of needle nose pliers in there to help you remove hooks safely. It is wise to have a first aid kit on hand as well and make sure it includes antibacterial lotion. In fact, the tackle box itself should be organized with all of your gear and kept clean. Some will even come with the artificial bait you may need.

The best place to find all that you need in fishing tackle is through the web. You'll find some of the best products here. Not sure what to purchase? Ask a local professional to help you to know what works well in your area. This can lead to some excellent fishing experiences.

Fishing Guides - Fishing Rod Casting Tips

Fishing Rod Casting

The action of a fishing rod is the behavior of the rod while being cast by an individual. The action of the rod may be the same for all the people who cast with it and it may be different for every person who casts with it. Very few casters cast exactly alike. Their hand, arm, muscular and nervous systems are never exactly alike and they con?sequently perform a cast with a rod differently than any other hand and arm, etc. The action of most rods will react substantially the same for all casters, however. When a rod does not react the same for one caster as another, the action of the rod for each caster is different. That is, a rod may be called a stiff action by one caster and a med?ium stiff action by another, and both are correct. The action of a rod, then, depends directly on the particular caster using it and may vary from caster to caster.

We will discuss rod action as it applies to fly rods, only. The rod actions are only discussed in general terms.

Wet Fly Fishing Rod Casting

WEJT FLY ACTION: Years ago, a ?wet fly action? fly rod was considered to be a rod that was very limber and which bent freely from the grip to the tip. The theory of such limber, soft rods was that they allowed the flies to fall gently into the water and the line to fall straight into the water. Either claim has questionable advantages under many conditions. Gradually, as the years have gone by, fisher?men began to find out that these old ?buggy whip wet fly rods? were actually poor rods for casting the wet fly and that rods suitable for dry fly casting generally cast wet flies much more satisfactorily. Act?ually, wet fly rods are non-existent today except when a maker turns out a poor dry fly rod and sells it to some novice as a ?wet fly rod.?

Dry Fly Fishing Rod Casting

DRY FLY ACTION: There are many ways to build a dry fly rod or dry fly action into a rod. Most of these methods produce good dry fly rods. I will briefly describe some of the better known methods of producing dry fly action in a rod.

HEWITT DRY FLY ACTION: Edward H. Hewitt, as you un?doubtedly know, was considered the best fly fisherman for trout in the world. There are those who are prone to minimize Hewitt?s abil?ities for personal reasons or self glory. However, I have never known or heard of anyone from reliable sources who could beat Hewitt for actually putting trout in a creel. Hewitt used a rod with action or the bending in the lower or middle part but not as pronounced as in the standard Dry Fly action. On a three piece rod, for example, the upper half of the middle section and the lower half of the tip have ?level tapers?, that is, the tapers are slight. This leaves these areas a little stiff. Such a rod has action all over but slightly more of the bending is in the butt section, the lower half of the middle section, and the top half of the tip.

Hewitt action is identical to the Standard Dry Fly action describ?ed below, except that the variations in the ?level tapered? areas are less from a straight taper than the Standard Dry Fly action ?level tapers.?

In one of the last letters from Hewitt, he wrote me that he much preferred this type of rod to all others and that he never was able to wear one out or soften up the action of such a rod no matter how long he use it. This means something coming from Hewitt. He not only had used rods of various types for a great many years but used them a great deal ever year. As always, Hewitt had Leonard make his rods and he always had the highest praised for them.

Salmon Fishing Lures

There are several ways to catch the kind of salmon you target. Some would use different fishing methods, while others would use fishing lures. As what all salmon fishing enthusiasts know, a lure is placed on the very end of the fishing line. But, what most of them did not know is that, improper placement of a lure could result to an unsatisfying day or worse no catch at all. Salmon fishing lures are supposed to be tightly connected to the end of the fishing line in order that it will not fall off from the fishing line when thrown into the waters. It may sound so simple and obvious, but still there are people who tend to neglect it, especially the beginners.

Getting yourself salmon fishing lures is not as simple as you think. You can?t just buy and attach them securely at the end of your fishing line. It doesn?t work that way. There are certain things you have to consider in selecting the best salmon fishing lures. From the different varieties of salmon fishing lures that are available in the market today, you can tell they have different designs. The designs are based on the diverse methods of fishing, types of waters you where you will fish, types of salmon species you want to, and to different fishing poles. And because your salmon fishing lures have to vary depending on the spots where you?ll fish, the type of fish you target, and what type of fishing pole you will use, it is best that you carefully choose the ones that are designed to best suit your specific needs.

If you use salmon fishing lures instead of using bait, you?ll have greater chance of hooking your target. According to some experts in salmon fishing, the technique in which you can successfully catch salmon is to keep your lure as attractive as possible. The action and the kind of lures you use can help attract the attention of salmon. Therefore, the more potential food your lures look like, the more interested your salmon will get. Also, it is important that you know what salmon feed in order for you to choose the best salmon fishing lures. For example, if you fish in a lake where salmon feed on flies, make sure you get salmon fishing lures that look like flies. Otherwise, your target will just snob and ignore your lure.

No matter how you use every techniques you know about, it is still not enough. Your skills also have something to do with hooking your target. So to make salmon fishing more fun as ever, carefully pick out the right salmon fishing lures that will wink at your target. Choose the ones that are worth to chasing for!

Fishing Tackle - Professional Tips

Fishing Tackle Guidelines

Fishing can be an extremely enjoyable and relaxing adventure. As long as you have the right tools, the fishing safety knowledge, and a little bit of support from friends or family, you could perform your fishing successfully.

However, the most overlooked factor in buying equipments is choosing the right fishing tackle. You should follow these simple guidelines in the selection of tackles.

1) You should choose the appropriate fishing flies that you would be using to catch the kind of fish you will be targeting to seize. The basic rule in choosing the kind of fly is to know which is abundant in that actual environment.

2) Once you have determined which fly to use, you should be able to choose the appropriate line to use. The three commonly used tackles are fly-fishing, plug casting and spinning. The difference between the three is that spinning and plug-casting makes use of bait as weight to drag the line from its reel to the target point of your fishing.

3) Fly lines come in four different types - weight-forward, double taper, shooting-taper and level taper. Within the four different types are numerous variations. However, once you have decided what kind of fishing wish to accomplish and what kind of fish you wish to catch, you will be using only a particular fishing line.

The fishing lines have numbers that rank from one to fifteen. However, the most common among anglers are the lines numbered from three to twelve in weight. As a basic rule for optimum catching, the first thirty feet of your line should be weighted and matched to the rod.

4) The next thing you should purchase is the rod and reel. The most suitable equipment for beginners is the spin-casting gears that is easy to operate and provides the least setbacks. For any kind of fishing, the recommended spin-casting reel is mounted on a light-action six-foot casting rod and spooled with an eight-pound test line. The reel and rod could be purchased as a package in many fishing stores. Most professional anglers prefer bait-casting and spinning tackle.

5) You would need sinkers, hooks and bobbers. Sinkers and hooks could be bought in different pack with different styles and sizes. When selecting bobbers, always keep in mind that the smaller the bobber, the better the performance. The struggling of the fish would depend on the size of your bobber.

6) Professional anglers prefer artificial lures. The recommended sizes of lures are 1/8 ounce up to ? ounce.

Remember that the kind of tackle would depend on the fish you prefer to catch. Avoid buying unnecessary fishing items and enjoy your affordable fishing experience.

Jug Fishing for Greazy and Other Brad Paisley Fishing Stories

Jug Fishing for Greazy and Other Brad Paisley Fishing Stories

Thanks to Brad Paisley's current hit song, "I'm Gonna Miss Her," people know two things-Brad Paisley loves fishing and he's got his priorities in order.

Jug Fishing for Greazy and Other Brad Paisley Fishing Stories is a collection of some of Brad's favorite fishing memories including:

  • Fishing with important men in his life such as his grandfather, Little Jimmy Dickens, World champion Bass angler Hank Parker, and his best friend and cowriter, Kelley Lovelace.
  • The time when members of Lonestar filled Brad's onstage water bottle with minnows and sat in the front row of the concert hall throwing minnows at his forehead as he tried to sing "I'm Gonna Miss Her."

The book includes an enhanced CD single of the song and the popular video for "I'm Gonna Miss Her".
