Fishing Reel Bearing - All You Need To Know

Fishing reel bearings fall into six categories these days: roller bearings, ball bearings, journal bearings, needle bearings, thrust bearings, and tapered bearings. Roller and ball bearings are the ones usually used, so I?ll get into detail about these two.

OK, first off, let?s examine the ?tech specs? of fishing reel bearings, particularly ball and roller bearings. There are two ?runway? tracks (technically called races) that the bearings, held in place by a cage, slide on while the bearing is spinning. To make sure the rollers and the cage don?t come out, there is a round shield and a shield retainer between the two races. If you want to examine a bearing, first pop out the shield retainer with a knife with a pointed tip or a needle, being careful not to loose it (it acts like a spring), then take the shield off.

How about oiling your bearing? You should oil them at least every year to retain long life and to keep your reel smoother. First, you?ll want to clean them. Putting some WD-40 on it and dabbing them on a paper towel or cloth is good way to get it done. Once you?re done cleaning it, I would recommend putting drops of oil from an applicator in between the two races. Be sure to buy quality oil recommended by your reel manufacturer. I use Quantum Hot Sauce and has worked for me very well. If there is a shield and retainer on the bearing, there is usually a little opening in between the races, so just let the oil drip in between them. Make sure not to put too much in the bearing, a couple of drops will do. Many people make the mistake of putting to much oil in the bearing which shortens the life of it and makes the handle hesitate to move freely.

Roller bearings for fishing reels have cylinders, or metal tubes, which ride in between the races. This type of bearing usually takes on low speeds and high loads because the roller, or cylinder, is rolling on a wide race. There is usually only one of these bearings in a fishing reel.

Fishing reel ball bearings usually take on high speeds and light loads because of less friction caused by the thinness of the race. Ball bearings do look different than roller bearings in that roller bearings are generally larger and have much wider races than ball bearings because of the long cylinders used roller bearings verses the tiny balls used in ball bearings.

Night fishing for speckled trout has become my favorite saltwater fishing tactics. Start off the morning waiting at home or at work for sunset, load up the truck with my heavy-duty night light, rod and reel, lure box and head off to my secret fishing spot were it's only me and 100's of speckled trout to be caught. Speckled trout night fishing is easy for youngsters to start getting in love with saltwater fishing at night. I would suggest that the first outing would be some were private. I have seen many things happen at night on a fishing pier, mostly kids getting hooked in the face or knocked down by a fisherman not looking where he was going.

Speckled trout at night can act so different at times when night fishing. They can be 2 feet below the water having a feeding frenzy or they can be on top of the water as if it were an underwater firework display. I have 3 lures that I absolute love to use when fishing for speckled trout at night.

3. Crystal Minnow plug

Usually I use the glass minnows tandem rigged (two of the same lures used at once) when the trout are real active at night. The lures are good to me because they match what the trout are feeding on at night, and they are small and can be worked reeeeeealllllly slow. This will make them want it even more. When I take my own light it is ran on a tripod stand with a 1000 watt generator with a strong stage spot light. This makes a perfect fishing experience for night fishing for speckled trout.

When you are going fishing, whether nearby your home or on a long distance trip, there are many fishing safety rules that you need to keep in mind.

Offshore Fishing Safety

When you go on a boat for a session of offshore fishing, you need to be extra careful. Out of all of the forms of fishing, this is the most dangerous. As long as you are careful, and you do not run or dart across the path of someone casting, shore fishing can be the safest of all types of fishing.

Noodling, or another term for "Idiot", is the practice of wading out to waist or chest level and bending down to search holes, logs and other hiding holes for catfish. Then you wiggle your fingers. If there is a catfish - or another type of creature in residence - they will attack your bare hand. Then the fight begins, and the Noodler needs to bring the fish to shore. Many lose their lives yearly to this extreme sport, and it should be avoided, as it is not safe.


Ice Fishing Safety

When you are going ice fishing, there are a lot of safety rules that you need to follow at all times. Unlike the other forms of standard fishing, ice fishing presents a lot of health risks. First, you should never go ice fishing without a well built shack. The shacks provide you shelter while you are ice fishing. Without this shelter, you will be susceptible to hypothermia and other health related problems.

The second thing you need to keep in mind at all times is the condition of the ice and the weather predictions. Falling through the ice while ice fishing, especially alone, is a death sentence. Being trapped on the open ice during a blizzard is also extremely dangerous, even with the shelter of an ice shack available. When you are stocking your ice shack, you need to make certain that you have enough wood for the wood stove, or heating device within the shack. This device should also be cared for and watched over at all times, so the ice beneath the shack remains stable or that the shack does not burn.

If you keep these fishing safety tips and rules in mind, you should be able to have an enjoyable time fishing without high risk of injury to yourself or others, no matter which form of fishing you choose to participate in.

Small stream nymphing is a very productive form of fly fishing. At times, you will not rise a fish to a dry fly. Yet there are fish feeding actively below the surface. So, you put the fly (nymph) to the fish.

Nymph fishing is probably the most challenging of all fly fishing techniques. Since the fly is underwater and is often extremely small, nymph fishing can test the abilities of any angler, and often leaves the beginner angler extremely frustrated. Yet, the ability of having a good nymph fishing technique is essential for productive trout fishing. The reason for this is simple most trout have a diet that consists primarily of sub-surface insects (nymphs). An angler who does not know how to nymph fish will be greatly limited on where they can fish and what they use.
